Unfortunately, conventional treatments aren’t controlling seizures for roughly 30% of people with epilepsy. Let's rewind and firstly cover how CBD works for seizures. Cannabis as a medicine has been used since as early as 2800 BC, but there’s been limited science behind why or how it works within the body.
But here’s what we do know. The endocannabinoid system, or the ECS, is a messenger and receptor system that is integral to homeostasis (the management of balance) within the human body. The ECS influences and modulates pretty much every single function within your body, directing, correcting and managing your overall health.
One of the core components of the ECS are the cannabinoid receptors, which includes CB1 and CB2. They’re one of the main reasons behind why cannabis works so positively on so many different conditions. Many experts believe that, by consuming compounds like CBD (or THC), it’s possible to interact with these receptors in the body.
This 2023 study, led by researchers at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, reveals how CBD has the potential to reduce seizures. There’s a molecule called lysophosphatidylinositol (LPI) that can be found in brain cells, which are called neurons. When it’s functioning normally, LPI is thought to amplify nerve signals. However, these signals can be hijacked by disease, and this is what promotes seizures. The new study found that CBD can block signals carried by LPI, preventing seizures.
It’s studies like this that have shown the potential benefit of certain plant-based CBD products in treating specific groups of people who suffer from seizures. And we’ll be exploring more of the benefits of CBD for seizure management as well as the side effects of CBD for seizures below.
Benefits of CBD for Seizure Management
As we’ve shown above, there’s evidence to back the benefits of cannabidiol for epilepsy and the seizures that come with it. For example, this study, which shows CBD can be effective in reducing seizures in some people with epilepsy. In another recent study without a placebo control, 214 people received Epidyolex and completed 12 weeks or more on the drug. During the study, seizures decreased by an average of 54%. Another great benefit of CBD is that it has fewer, and less extreme, side effects compared to traditional medications.
The two benefits above combined are simply incredible. Why? Because they show how CBD can massively improve quality of life for someone who suffers from seizures.
CBD Products for Seizure Control
Currently, Epidyolex is the only cannabis-based medicine for epilepsy that has been approved in the UK for prescription on the NHS. It contains pure CBD, does not contain any THC, and was approved by the FDA in June 2018.

Whilst there is some evidence that Epidyolex may be effective for other types of epilepsy, it isn’t great. Specialists can still prescribe it on a case-by-case basis, but it’s likely it would only be in exceptional circumstances, when other treatments haven’t worked.
